INTRODUCTION

Montréal’s heritage policy and
the tools for its implementation

“Heritage means any asset or group of assets, natural or cultural, tangible or intangible, that a community recognizes for its value as a witness to history and memory, while emphasizing the need to safeguard, to protect, to adopt, to promote and to disseminate such heritage.”

In May 2005, city council adopted the Heritage Policy, responding to a need expressed by Montrealers over several decades and reaffirmed during the Sommet de Montréal. The objective of the policy is to organize and orient the actions of the city and its partners in order to encourage the development of a collective vision and a shared responsibility for Montréal’s heritage and to make heritage a means of cultural, social and economic development.

Your building, modest as it may be, is part of Montréal’s architectural heritage, which greatly contributes to the city’s interest and appeal. This is why it is so important to preserve and enhance its original characteristics. Appropriate and carefully planned interventions ensure the protection of this heritage and improve the quality of life in each neighbourhood.

Find out more about the Heritage Policy and do not hesitate to consult the Built Heritage Evaluation reports as well as the Built Heritage Directory on the city’s web site (www.ville.montreal.qc.ca/patrimoine). This directory is a collection of data sheets of buildings and sectors of exceptional interest. You may also visit the “Heritage in detail” section of the Old Montreal web site (www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/inventaire/hall_eng.htm).

You can also get brochures pertaining to the maintenance, repair and renovation of the main architectural components of residential and commercial buildings. This information can serve as a guide for you to successfully complete your projects while respecting your building’s original character. These brochures are available in all city borough offices.

If you have any doubts about the conservation, renovation or restoration of your building or on the integration of a new construction, get all the information you need from the Direction de l’aménagement urbain et des services aux entreprises in your borough.
